Wednesday Book Reviews for 6-6-18

Today’s Books and resources are from Todd Friel. He is the Host of Wretched TV and Radio.  These books are practical and important as we think about the Gospel and our proclamation of the Gospel.

Wednesday Book Reviews for 6-6-18Jesus Unmasked: The Truth Will Shock You

Jesus Unmasked reveals over thirty Old Testament stories that point to Jesus Christ Himself. What were once shadowy pictures of redemption in the Old Testament became a vivid reality when Jesus Christ was born.

Friel presents Jesus as the scarlet thread weaving the Old and New Testaments together beautifully bringing the gospel to life for unbelievers, new believers, and mature believers pursuing spiritual growth. Hear Jesus tell us who He is in the gospels. See Him in the historical events and prophecies of our ancient biblical history. Only God could write one story through dozens of authors over thousands of years about one man without a single contradiction. Continue reading

Two Religions Can They Coexist?

Two religionsHave you asked yourself, “How many so-called- Christian denominations there are in America?” Then add to that what other non-Christian religions there are.  Someone has said that there are over two thousand Christian denominations in America. Wow!  That’s a lot.  I mean, there’s the Lutherans, the Presbyterians, Roman Catholics, the Methodists, then, of course, there’s the Baptists, I mean the BAPTISTS, look out for those “hell-fire and brimstone” Baptists!  And the list goes on and on. But I would like to suggest that in reality, there are only two religions. Continue reading

The Saving Love of God

The saving Love of GodIs the saving love of God unconditional or conditional? As we saw in my last article, the love of God for humanity in a temporal, physical as well as in a compassionate sense, is unconditional.  But in His saving love is there a difference?

It is often said; “God loves everyone the same.”  But if that was the case, why are not all saved and why does the Scriptures in John 3:36 tell us that those who are outside of Christ, that God’s wrath “abides” (KJV, NKJV, NASB), “rests” (RSV) or “remains” (ESV, HCSB) on them.  This verse makes clear as do others (Psalm 7:11, 26:5; 139:21-22; Proverbs 28:14; Romans 2:5) that God’s hatred and judgment are upon the unrepentant. But at the same time, God’s general love in compassion for the lost is also evident as seen in Jesus love and compassion for the unrepentant rich young ruler (Mark 10:17-21). And, in what was meant to be an insult, Jesus was described as a “friend of sinners” (Luke 7:34). Continue reading

God’s Unconditional Love

God's Unconditional loveIt is often said, that God’s love is unconditional.  And there is a real sense in which God’s unconditional love is true.  God does in His general, unconditional love, love all mankind. This can be seen in a number of ways but is clearly illustrated in Matthew 5:43-46.

Matthew 5:43-46 (ESV) 43  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44  But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45  so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46  For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? Continue reading

God Is Love An Introduction

God is Love Introduction1 John 4:7-8 (ESV) 7  Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8  Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:16 (ESV) 16  So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

I have spent several days contemplating this subject.  Frankly, if you know Christ you will spend the rest of your life and into eternity contemplating the love of God. It is massive and complex. Continue reading

Wednesday Book Reviews for 5-30-18

This week I want to highlight 3  biographical sketches by Steven Lawson.  I call them sketches because they are not long books but, for the most part under 200 pages which emphasize the ministries of the titled men. These are from his series called, “A Long Line of Godly Men Profile.”  Today are three of the Reformers.

Wednesday Book Reviews for 5-30-18The Daring Mission of William Tyndale
By Steven Lawson

In The Daring Mission of William Tyndale, Dr. Steven J. Lawson traces this daring mission, which was ultimately used by God to ignite the English Reformation yet would cost Tyndale his life. From one man’s labor, we’re reminded of God’s faithfulness to preserve His Word and equip His people. Continue reading

Wednesday Book Reviews for 5-23-18True Christian’s Love to the Unseen Christ
By  Thomas Vincent

Whom having not seen, ye love. . . .—1 Peter 1:8

Love to Christ is essential to true Christianity. Without love, faith lies dead, like a body without a soul. While many claim to be Christians, their lack of love for Christ proves that they know nothing of Christianity’s true nature. Therefore Christ demands love from all His disciples, knowing the transforming power it has over the souls of men. Continue reading

He Did It Again!

He Did It Again

Remo Casilli/Reuthers

Juan Carlos Cruz, a key whistleblower in Chile’s most famous case of clerical sex abuse, spent three days with Pope Francis at the Vatican in April, in which he discussed his sexuality and the abuse he suffered at the hands of a Chilean priest. In describing his time with the Pope to CNN, Cruz said: “You know Juan Carlos, that does not matter. God made you like this. God loves you like this. The Pope loves you like this and you should love yourself and not worry about what people say.”[1]  The New York Times reported that the Pope said[2] “You have to be happy with who you are. God made you this way and loves you this way, and the pope loves you this way.”  To the BBC, Juan Carlos Cruz reported that the pope said, “He said you have to understand that God made you this way and he loves you, and the Pope loves you and you have to love yourself.”[3]  Looks like he did it again. Biblical Coherence

Biblical CoherenceWhen we speak of Biblical coherence we mean Biblical synthesis or what is called the synthetic principle.  What this means is that the Bible is to be understood as a library of 66 books that collected together, become one book.  It also means that the “Scripture is to be its own interpreter” and as such the “Scripture is to be compared with Scripture in order to discover its accurate and full meaning.”[1] What is meant by that is that the Bible does not contradict itself but rather through progressive revelation establishes, and makes clear through the testimony of the whole, Biblical truth. Wednesday Book Reviews for 5.16.18

Wednesday Book Reviews for 5-16-18

This reviews below are all dealing with the authority and inerrancy of the Bible.  These four books are good reads and will give the reader a solid foundation for the authority of the Scriptures.

Wednesday Book reviews for 5.-6-18Why Believe the Bible?
John MacArthur

We live in a culture that more and more questions authority, truth claims, and traditional beliefs. So what are we to believe about the authority and trustworthiness of a book that is thousands of years old? Is God’s Word truly inerrant? How is it different from other religious texts? Why should we trust its claims? Continue reading
