Triumphal Entry

Triumphal EntryFor most Christian churches we have now entered “Passion  Week” and it starts off with the Triumphal Entry of Christ into Jerusalem.  We have now entered the climactic portion of the Life of Christ.  It is in this last week we have the disciples under intense teaching from our Lord as he prepares to leave them. It really began the day before passion week with Jesus’ visit to Mary, Martha and Lazarus’ home in the small town of Bethany where Jesus was served dinner by Martha and Mary used anointed Him with pure nard (John 12:1-3). Grace or Works Part 3

grace of worksMy early religious background taught that salvation was a process of obedience to the Church and what the Church taught about Christ.  It was also tied to church traditions, liturgy, and sacraments. There was a special emphasis that through the Lord’s Table or the Eucharist we were fed by Christ through participation in the Eucharist. It was as a salvation by religious observance and good works. The point to all this was that there was no forensic or legal justification but rather an infused justification through these avenues as well as our good works. It was not grace alone but a view of grace and works. Continue reading

Grace or Works Part 2

Grace aloneIn my last post on Grace or Works on Friday, we saw that it is only grace in salvation that brings full glory to God. Any thought or action that bring any credit to you robs God of Glory. We don’t deserve His mercy, we can’t earn His mercy, nor can we add in any way to God’s grace.  Gace is the sole prerogative of God.

We also saw that no amount of works on our part adds in any way to our righteousness.  It not only robs God of His glory, our righteousness can never satisfy God’s justice.  Any work we would do only has temporal value and cannot appease God wrath against sin which demands eternal death (Roman 3:23).  When we think that somehow God will accept our works, our so-called good intentions, we place more value on them that they are worth. Paul, in Romans, tells us that our works are not counted as favor but rather as a payment, what is due. Continue reading

Virginia Delegate Nick Freitas on Gun Control

Here is a powerful seven-minute speech by Del. Nick Freitas on gun control. It is passionate and thoughtful. He calls out the anti-gun Left, over some of their favorite policies, and especially over their “end-of-discussion” debating tactics which clearly prevent the sort of “open and honest” debate they say they want.

It is a must watch as you hear Nick Freitas dress down the Left.  It was not surprising that the Left was offended. Never-the-less, it was a dressing-down that was sorely needed!

Grace or Works

Romans 11:6 (ESV) 6  But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

Grace aloneHave you had anyone say to you; “When I die I’ll get into heaven because I am basically a good person and God will weigh the good against the bad and I’ll get in.”  The whole premise of their argument is that it has a very human view of sin with some sins that are REALLY bad and others that are “not so bad.”

I had a pastor friend of mine, who years ago relate another story that makes the same point.  My pastor friend was swimming every morning to get himself in shape.  While he was there at the pool, he noticed an older man helping out a swimming instructor teach some disable children how to swim. One day he engaged the older man in discussion and asked him why he had volunteered.  He said, “It’s rewarding to help out and besides, I  think God will be pleased and it should help me get into heaven.”  The pastor’s response I think was insightful; “Just how many will you have to help learn to swim before God will let you into heaven?” Continue reading

Do You Know?

Know savedAs I was growing up there were a lot of things I came to know.  No, I don’t mean that adolescent “know” that is all-encompassing; “I certainly know more than my parents.”  What I mean, is that there were certain things I was taught as being true or at least I knew them as truth because they came from people or organizations I trusted.  Of course, this knowledge was, for the most part, purely subjective or at least not founded, for the most part by an irrefutable authority. The Whole Christ, Legalism, Antinomianism & Gospel Assurance – Why the Marrow Controversy Still Matters

By: Sinclair B Ferguson

Since the days of the early church, Christians have wrestled with the relationship between law and gospel. If, as the apostle Paul says, salvation is by grace and the law cannot save, what relevance does the law have for Christians today? Continue reading

Moralism, A Default Position

The Gospel vs moralism.Yesterday, while I was out and about, I stopped into a business to get some info on a recall on our travel trailer and by a couple of LED lights.  As I walked in I saw a friend sitting in his office and I decided to stop in and say hello.  I always look for him as I have developed a relationship with him and as we talked, the conversation turned to church and ministry as my friend behind the desk was interested and wanted to know how things were going at the church to which I ministered.  We have had this kind of conversation every time I stopped by and never seems to get past moralism as his default position. The Message I Love

The Gospel1 Corinthians 2:2 (NKJV) 2  For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

This is a repost of an article I wrote over two years ago in which I explain my love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  It is something I often think about when I review why I am in the ministry. Continue reading
